How to Paint an Acrylic Bathtub

Before you apply any acrylic bathtub paint, it is important that you first give your tub a good scrub down. Use muriatic acid to remove any lime and oil deposits. Next you will have to sand it down a little, not to remove the old paint, but instead to give the new paint a surface that is easier for it to stick to. Next, be sure to cover up the walls and any other surface that you do not wish to paint in order to keep them safe. For example, you can use masking tape and pieces of cloth to cover up the drain and faucets.

Once you have everything prepared, it is time to apply your acrylic bathtub paint. These days it is easy to find acrylic kits that contain everything you need in one handy box. If you wish, you can create decorative designs for the outside of your tub to give it a personalized look such as by painting flowers or another design you like.

Acrylic kits will typically contain epoxy paint. Locate this now as you will need to apply it to the inside of the tub. The fumes can be hazardous when breathed, so be sure to use a face mask while painting. Using your paintbrush, you are going to begin at the side of the bathtub nearest to the wall. Using a full brush start at the top and gently work your way down. Continue until the tub wall and ledges are completely covered. Now you should allow it to dry overnight. Afterward you may remove the masking tape.

Next, you will want to mix the clear epoxy acrylic bathtub paint with the resin, in a 50/50 blend. Apply a thin coat to any decorative designs you may have made earlier on. Work very slowly and be careful. If you wish, you can paint similar designs on your other bathroom fixtures so they match. If you do however, make sure that all your designs are finished before you open your sealer. You can clean up any spilled acrylic bathtub paint using turpentine and be sure that you dispose of any leftover in the proper manner.

If you prefer, instead of painting by hand you may want to use a spray gun to apply your acrylic bathtub paint. This is a very simple method and it goes a lot faster. Simply fill up the pot on your spray gun with your paint and be sure to test it out on another surface to make sure it is working properly. In order to make sure you apply an even coat, you gently spray in a back and forth motion. When you reach the edges be sure to take your finger off the trigger so you don’t accidentally over-paint.
