Bathtub Refinishing Guide

Plenty of us like to do work around the home and we may consider it to be rather enjoyable to take care of some larger projects that may come up from time to time. A good example of this is whenever the bathtub needs some repair, and we may start looking for ways to be able to take care of this job on our own. Most of these are taken care of through DIY kits for bathtub refinishing that can be purchased and will provide you with everything that you need in order to take care of the project.

There are several things that are going to be included in the DIY bathtub refinishing kit that you will need to pay particular attention to. It is not just a matter of taping things off and painting on the new finish, it is going to require that you are meticulous with the prep work. The first thing that you are going to need to do is to clean the tub thoroughly and to make sure that you do so with chemicals that will remove as much of the dirt that has been built up over the years as possible. You are also going to need to remove any caulking that may be around the tub and to make sure that it is completely gone.

Once this initial phase has been completed, you are going to tape everything off and lay drop cloths over anything that is exposed, especially if you are going to be using the spray gun to complete the tub reglazing project. This phase of the preparation work is going to take some finesse on your part and to tell you the truth, many people have years of bathtub refinishing training before they are comfortable with doing this. Even so, you will be able to complete this step of refinishing your bathtub successfully, provided you have a steady hand and a keen eye.

Once the imperfections are filled in and of many of the waves that exist have been smoothed out, it will come time for you to prepare the surface for painting. If you really want to do a professional refinishing job on that bathtub, it will be necessary for you to use an acid wash in order to eat away some of the old finish so that the new finish can get a good grip. This will also help to remove any chemicals that could cause the paint to quickly peel or blister.

The final step in the DIY bathtub refinishing project is painting the tub. If you bought a kit, you will probably have the paint and a roller available in order to apply the paint. The unfortunate thing is, you will be unable to get a truly professional job by using a roller so if you have the availability of a paint gun, this would help to make a much more even looking finish.

After you have applied the final coach, you're going to need to make sure that you allow sufficient time, at least 48 hours before anybody uses the tub. This will give it sufficient time to dry and make the most out of this do-it-yourself project.
