How to Refinish a Bathtub in a Weekend

When you have a bathtub that is old and worn looking, it doesn't matter how much you clean it or how diligent you are with scrubbing it, you are not going to be able to bring that new like finish back to it. As you are probably already aware, a tub that looks like this can make the entire bathroom looked as if it is incomplete or somehow has not been cleaned well.

Fortunately, it is possible for you to do a bathtub refinishing project on one of these tubs within just a weekend by using a do-it-yourself kit. If you are least a little bit handy, you can refinish a bathtub and be happy with the results.

One thing that you don't want to leave out is considering the possibility of hiring a professional to come in and take care of the job for you. A DIY bathtub refinishing kit is typically going to cost you a couple hundred dollars in order to purchase and for just a couple hundred more, you can have a professional job done. If you are determined to take care of it yourself, however, just make sure that you understand the basics that will help to make the finished product as professional as possible.

Believe it or not, the most important part of refinishing a bathtub begins before the visible part of refinishing ever starts. Preparing the entire bathtub in order to accept the new coat of glazing that you are going to add to it is going to make or break the entire job. Not only are you going to have to remove any caulking or debris that may be stuck to the tub, you also need to thoroughly wash it with the specialty acid wash in order to penetrate deep into the finish and remove the grime that has been built up over the years.

Repairing any damage (especially Japanese Bathtub repairs) that may have happened is also a very important part when you refinish a bathtub. Make sure that you use professional grade materials when doing these repairs, as cheaper materials may end up popping or cracking over the course of time which would ruin the entire finish. You also want to make sure that any filler that is added is sanded until it is completely smooth. The glazing is going to cause any imperfection that is left over to be magnified many times, so it must be perfect to start with.

After the damage has been repaired, you need to wash it once again with another acid rinse that will rough up the surface of the tub so that it will accept the new paint. You can then either paint it with the supplied roller that was in the kit or you can rent a professional spray gun which will give you a much better result in the end.

Each and every step that you take when you refinish a bathtub is going the make a difference in how professional of a job you do. Make sure that you take your time and that you overwork any areas that need to be done. The end result will be a tub that looks new, and it will be something that you can be proud of.
