Refinish Clawfoot Tub Help and Options

Over the course of time, some items that we have made age gracefully while others may end up looking as if they could use a little bit of work. The used clawfoot tub is one item that rarely ever ages gracefully and although we could have a very old Clawfoot bathtub in our bathroom, which does not necessarily mean that we want an antique look that could be considered to be dirty. Pitting on the inside of the tub can also make it a bit uncomfortable, so from time to time it may be a good idea to refinish Clawfoot tub interiors and exteriors.

Refinishing Kohler Clawfoot tubs are something that is generally left to professionals, as very few of us have the equipment lying around that is going to make the job a great one. If you would like to tackle the job yourself, some of the things that you're going to need is a scraper in order to remove any caulking if the tub is attached to a wall, some professional acid rinse and acid etching paste, plastic sheeting, painters tape and a professional paint gun.

The first step to refinish Clawfoot tub interiors is to remove any caulking that maybe along the edge, if the tub is attached to a wall. Be careful not to damage any of the surrounding tiles, as you do not want to get into tile work along with the refinishing project. Once this is completed, the entire antique clawfoot bathtub should be sprayed down with an acid rinse and then scrubbed thoroughly. Make sure that you wear latex gloves and a respirator, as you will be working with some rather strong chemicals.

After the scrubbing work is complete, the tub should be rinsed thoroughly and the entire area surrounding the tub should be covered with plastic. An acid etching paste should be applied to the tub, in order to rough up the surface and prepare it to accept the primer and paint. After waiting the specified period of time, rinse this acid primer down the drain and thoroughly clean the tub, being careful not to allow chemicals to come back into contact with the tub as this could ruin the paint.

A primer should be applied, making sure that even coverage is achieved over the entire interior of the tub. This is a very important step whenever you refinish Clawfoot tub interiors, as it will prepare the area for paint properly. When the primer has dried, you're going to apply a combination of white paint and polyurethane through the professional spray gun in long sweeping strokes in order to ensure even coverage. This is what we give the tub that finished look that you are trying to achieve.

Refinishing Clawfoot tubs can be a very rewarding experience if you're able to take care of it yourself. If you are unsure of yourself and would just like to make sure that you get a great-looking job, it is something that can be hired out to a professional.
